Calcasieu Parish ranked in the top 25 schools in Louisiana for college readiness according to US News World and Report: Barbe (15), Westlake (18), & Sulphur (21) high schools.

Southwest Louisiana is proud to have many distinguished graduates of our elementary and secondary public school systems thatinclude Dr. Michael DeBakey, noted heart surgeon and creator of M.A.S.H. units, David Filo, co-creator of Yahoo!, Ralph Eggleston, 2000 Academy Award winner for animation and artistic director of Toy Story,and Tony Kushner, author of Angels in America and Tony Award winner.
School System Notables
Beauregard Parish earned a 116.3 - "B" rating its 2013 District performance school, and ranks first in the state for highest graduation rate with a 90.2% graduation rate. Beauregard Parish has nine schools earning either an "A" or "B' on their 2013 School Performance Scores.

Dolby Elementary School was selected National Network of Partnership Schools 2013 Partnership School.
Sam Houston High School was selected 2014 National Athletic Trainers' Association Safe Sports School 2nd Team.

Vincent Settlement Elementary School selected as 2008 No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon School.
Westwood Elementary and Frasch Elementary Schools received the Chamber Foundation’s Southwest Louisiana Quality Award of Significant Progress.

Jade Welch of Kinder Elementary School, Krista Davis of Elizabeth High School, and Ashley Miles of Kinder High School were the 2014 Allen Parish Teachers of the Year.

William Bundy of Oak Park Elementary, Darnold Catlon of Jake Drost School, and Alicia Jones of Westlake High were the 2014 Calcasieu Parish Teachers of the Year.

Rachael Benoit of Lacassine Elementary, Christopher Martin of Lake Arthur High School, and Vickie Dees of Jennings High were the 2014 Jeff Davis Teachers of the Year.

DeRidder High, South Beauregard High, and DeRidder Junior High are AdvanceED Accredited schools. Eddie Joslin, principal of DeRidder Junior High School was a finalist in the 2013 Principal of the Year program sponsored by the State Department of Education.

Sowela Technical Community College designed the Fast Track Process Technology Program at the request of local industrial employers. Sowela designed and delivers a compressed format Process Technology Program that allows select individuals possessing a college degree to enroll and earn 40 credit hours of Process Technology coursework in one 16 week semester. This allows someone wishing to change careers a rapid response and access to the training necessary for them to interview for an entry-level process technician position.

McNeese State University Student created an Innovation Center and Innovation Minor available to all its students. The minor uses real world business cases presented by industry leaders with students working in groups and on their own to analyze problems and develop solutions. Instructors are mentors in this interactive learning environment and students gain confidence in their ability to think creatively and communicate meaningfully creative ideas. The classroom and lab are located in the new SEED Center and are equipped with state-of-the-art resources and technology.

Higher Education

McNeeseStateUniversity, located in Lake Charles, has an approximate student population of 8,400. Founded as a junior college division of LouisianaStateUniversity in 1939, it is today now a fully accredited university operating under the Louisiana Board of Trustees. It provides notable degree programs including an MBA program and degrees in Nursing, Engineering, Education, etc. All in all, McNeese offers over 100 degree programs.

Delta Tech, founded in 1970, is a private co-educational school offering business, medical, and technical courses. The school is located in Lake Charles' historical district at 517 Broad Street.
